Choosing a work sock by material
Material does most of the work here, and the right one depends on your conditions more than the season.
Bamboo: hot shops and sweaty feet
Bamboo socks move moisture well and resist odour, which is why they are the pick for warm shops, long shifts and anyone whose feet run hot. They are soft without being thin, and they stay comfortable deep into a double.
Wool: cold weather and all-day wear
Wool work socks insulate when it is cold and still regulate temperature when it is not, which makes them more versatile than people expect. Wool handles moisture without feeling wet and resists odour over long wear, so it suits outdoor work and unheated shops.
Cotton: everyday comfort
Cotton work socks are the familiar option: soft, breathable and easy to live with for general shop and shift work in moderate conditions.
Boot socks and height
If you wear work boots, height matters as much as material. Boot socks run taller so the cuff sits above the boot collar, which stops the boot rubbing your calf and keeps the sock from sliding down into the heel. Taller socks also add cushioning where a boot is stiffest. If you have ever finished a shift with a sock bunched under your arch, this is the fix.
Why these socks exist
About Work is the apparel side of Val's shop, made for the people who actually do the work rather than the catalogue version of them. The socks are built around long shifts, hard floors and steel-toe boots, which is a different problem from athletic socks or dress socks. Pair them with the rest of the range: t-shirts, hoodies and winter essentials.
